Green Bank Radio Astronomy Observatory

Of all the places we’ve visited, the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Green Bank, West Virginia is closest to a spiritual home. L&N has spent hundreds of hours on site during a series of trips over the last two years, and we intend to dedicate a concentrated block of time to documenting these incredible telescopes in 2015. Due to tremendous sensitivity of the observatory’s instruments, no electronics are allowed within a mile of the main telescope – a gigantic monster nearly as tall as the Washington Monument, and arguably the largest moving object on land. These restrictions present a unique challenge for photographers, and our approach has been to rely on large format film shot with fully mechanical cameras made of nothing more than wood, metal and glass.
